Small Scenes and Nature First With Sarah Marino

Sarah Marino is truly one of my favorite nature photographers.

Why?

Because I absolutely cannot do what she does. Trust me, I’ve tried. Several times, in fact. The way that Sarah is able to create incredible small scenes in nature is beyond me. She takes a chaotic scene and transforms the chaos into order with her compositions. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to have her on The Landscape Photography Show. Not only that, but she’s also doing amazing things to help protect the places that she loves to shoot as part of the Nature First movement.

This is a very meaty podcast episode and Sarah Marino and I go back and forth on our ideas of photography, working a scene, and applying Nature First Principles to our in-field workflow.

In this episode, Sarah Marino and I start off by discussing the art of crafting small scenes in landscape photography. I think I’ve asked Sarah about this every time we’ve talked, but I still have trouble creating small scenes in the field. I’m sure she’s tired of me asking by now. She does a wonderful job explaining her workflow of slower photography rather than having a checklist of shots to get. It’s something that I’ve applied to my in-field workflow and it has paid major dividends.

Among other topics, Sarah and I also discussed the Nature First Principles. They are divided into seven core principles:

  1. Prioritize the well-being of nature over photography.

  2. Educate yourself about the places you photograph.

  3. Reflect on the possible impact of your actions.

  4. Use discretion if sharing locations.

  5. Know and follow rules and regulations.

  6. Always follow Leave No Trace principles and strive to leave places better than you found them.

  7. Actively promote and educate others about these principles.
