How to Take the BEST Black and White Landscape Photography

I started out my photography career with a 35mm film camera that only shot black and white photographs. I loved the whole process of taking the photo and then using a dark room and chemicals to extract the image from photo paper.

After I switched to digital, however, I tended to only shoot color photos.

I LOVE COLOR IMAGES. The impact you can create from a photo with colors is unlike anything I had ever experienced.

But, I never lost my love of black and whites. There’s just something so simple and beautiful about black and white landscape photography.

Recently, I really started diving deep into what actually creates a great black and white landscape photography. Initially I would just switch a photo over to black and white in post processing to see if it looked any better, but I remember thinking, “There’s got to be an actual way you can look at a scene and know it will be a great black and white landscape photo.

Through much thought and learning, I finally realized that to take the best black and white landscape photography you have to find interesting contrasts in nature.

Looking for split gray tones is going to be the easiest way to do this.

Whenever you’re out in nature, be sure to look for colors that would be far apart from each other on the gray scale. Yellows and blues have always been colors that work well for me.

Also, a strong contrast in your highlights and shadows will allow you to separate gray tones and create dynamic and compelling black and white photos.

Weather is another way to use nature to create black and white photos. Has it snowed? Snow is a great highlight to pair with darker gray tones. Is it raining? Use the rain from a distance as you main subject for you photo.

This strategy takes a lot of practice.

It took me about nine years to really figure it out, so if it doesn’t come easy at first, don’t get discouraged. Keep going.
